De totembackground geeft aan hoe sterk een garou zich kan binden met een totem. Een garou kan zich binden aan een persoonlijk totem. Een persoonlijk totem kost 5 punten totembackground en geeft geen bonussen en is dus eigenlijk meer een soort spirit-ally. Daarnaast zijn er packtotems. Wanneer een totem zich met een pack verbindt, moet elk packlid minsten 1 punt in het pack totem stoppen en het pack als geheel minstens zoveel punten als de kosten van het totem zoals die in het boek staan of, als een totem niet in het boek staat, zoals door de narrators bepaald. Alle punten die over zijn plus alle punten die later in het totem gestopt worden mogen gebruikt worden om extra mogelijkheden voor het totem aan te schaffen volgens onderstaande lijst.

*1 punt: 3 punten extra gnosis, rage en/of willpower voor het totem
*1 punt: het totem kan ook met packleden spreken die geen spirit speach hebben
*1 punt: het totem kan elk packlid altijd vinden
*1 punt: het totem is het grootste gedeelte van de tijd in de buurt van een van de packleden
*2 punten: het totem wordt gerespecteerd door andere spirits
*2 punten: per extra charm voor het totem
*3 punten: per extra packlid dat de krachten van het totem in dezelfde ronde kan gebruiken
*4 punten: totem is mystiek verbonden met alle packleden en stelt ze in staat om mentaal met elkaar te communiceren, ook over grote afstanden. Spelers moeten dit zelf faciliteren, we gaan als narrators niet heen en weer lopen om boodschappen van packleden aan elkaar over te brengen.
*5 punten: wezens van de wyrm zijn bang voor het totem, wat een vechten-of-vluchten reaktie op het pack ontlokt.

Een totem spirit begint met acht punten verdeeld over rage/gnosis/willpower. Een spirit heeft rage+gnosis+willpower aan essence, dus een totem spirit begint met 8 punten essence Een totem spirit begint met de airt sense en reform charms.

Tenzij anders aangegeven in de beschrijving van het totem zijn de bonussen onder traits in zijn geheel door 1 pack lid te gebruiken. Dat pack lid kan er voor kiezen om de bonussen door te geven aan een ander packlid. Elke ronde kan slechts een pack lid de bonussen gebruiken. Tenzij anders aangegeven worden de bonussen elke ronde ververst. ''Voorbeeld: totem Vos geeft onder andere twee punten stealth. De Ginger Wolves willen proberen om langs een bewaker te sluipen. Jamie heeft de totembonussen en waagt de eerste poging. Hij verliest zijn eerste test en hertest met een punt stealth van vos. Deze test lukt en Jamie heeft de bewaker omzeild. Hij geeft de totembonussen nu door aan Riannon. Riannon heeft nu ook weer twee punten stealth van het totem om te hertesten.''

De uitzondering op het elke ronde resetten van bonus traits zijn:

*willpower/rage/gnosis, dat elke sessie reset
*brawl, dat elke sessie reset

Leden van packs sterven of vertrekken en eens in de zoveel tijd komen er ook nieuwe leden bij een pack of er worden nieuwe punten totem gekocht, kortom de hoeveelheid punten totem veranderd nog wel eens. Als het totaal aantal punten totem hoger wordt dan kunnen extra mogelijkheden bijgekocht worden voor de kosten van de bovenstaande lijst. Gaat de totale aantal punten totem omlaag dan zullen wij na verloop van tijd aangeven dat de totem zwakker gaat worden tenzij er extra punten bijkomen.
